Valentine Fact, Fun origins and History
There are several stories about the origin of Valentine’s Day. One legend dates
back about 1700 years. The Emperor Clausius II outlawed marriages. He felt that
it decreased his male soldier’s zest for battle. Even though marriages had been
outlawed, one priest (also a doctor), named Valentine, continued to perform
marriage ceremonies for young lovers. On February 14, 269 AD Valentine was
beaten and beheaded on the Flaminian Way in Rome for his commitment to love. A
year later, the Bishop of Terni was also martyred at the same place.
Valentine's day falls close to the ancient ancient Roman fertility festival of
Lupercalia (February 15). This pagan holiday was celebrated with revelry and the
sacrificing of goats and dogs. There is also an old legend that says birds
choose their mates on this day. Sometime, during the first Century or so, the
Church determined that two Christian martyrs should be celebrated on this day
instead.
Some believe that Valentine Day is celebrated in the middle of
February in commemorate the death or burial of Saint Valentine, which is to be
told happened around 270 A.D.
Saint Valentine was a priest who served in the third century in Rome.
He preformed marriages to young men after Emperor Claudius II decided the young
single men made better soldiers then the men with wives and family. He outlawed
marriages for the young single men. Saint Valentine defied his orders and
continued to perform such marriages.
Saint Valentine was poisoned and sentenced to death. While waiting for his
sentence to be carried out he fell in love with a lady which he wrote letters
to. The last letter he wrote to her he signed "From Your Valentine"
Others claim that the church may have decided to celebrate Valentine in February
in efforts to "Christianize" celebrations of the pagan Luperecalia festival.
However Valentine Day begun, every February across the country flowers, candy
and gifts are exchanged between love ones.
